I was not judicious in my language, I apologize. When I say “more threes”, I meant as a ratio of his total field goal attempts. Certainly we agree Wiggins took more threes overall, but when he takes three times as many shots overall that doesn’t tell us anything.

Similar story on the free throw line: making an extra 200 out of 300 free throws is 67%, surely we agree that’s a very bad number for a perimeter player, and attempting twice as many free throws on three times as many field goal attempts demonstrates that Hayward drew more fouls per touch.

Put all this together and even in fewer minutes with many fewer touches per minute, Hayward generated more overall contribution than Wiggins with 4.9 to 4.2 Win Shares mainly because he was a significantly more efficient scorer. It’s not enough to match %s if you don’t also match ratios. If I shoot 40% FG and 40% 3P and all my shots are threes, I’m scoring way better than if you shoot 40% FG and 40% 3P and you only took one out of ten shots from three, you know?
